accepting the things we cannot change

whoah. this is a big topic I know. But it’s been on my heart for awhile and I just need to let it out and what better way to do that than write about it! Because I am sure y’all have been through this too.

Accepting what we don’t like can be one of the hardest challenges we face. For some, its a daily battle. Have you ever caught yourself trying to change things you have no control over? I know I have. If we can’t change a situation or an outcome our best option is to learn how to accept it and deal with it. But what we don’t often think about is that acceptance has benefits. A few of them are:

  • A more positive attitude
  • Less worry and stress
  • Less energy drained from trying to figure things out
  • Ability to embrace change
  • Greater appreciation and gratitude
  • A more compassionate perspective

Acceptance is not the same as resignation. We can continue to push forward despite accepting that there are things beyond our control. I have a few tips on learning to accept the things we can’t change and move on.

  1. LET GO OF THE PAST-  we all have baggage. all of us. this baggage gets heavier the longer we hold onto it. we can’t change the past. no matter how hard we try. what happened in your past happened, so our only hope is to learn how to accept our past and move forward. if we sit and dwell, it only makes things so much harder. instead, take the past, and learn from it and make the future even better.
  2. LEARN TO LOVE YOURSELF- loving yourself is one of the MOST important things for your health. in fact, to me its the most important. self worth is extremely important and your worth is not defined by your past, others opinions, or anything that isn’t your own opinion. your worth is defined by YOU and you only. love yourself because everything about you is the way it is for a reason. God doesn’t make mistakes.
  3. MAKE IT MEANINGFUL- whenever things go wrong, we automatically qualify it as the “worst thing ever”. but sometimes these things are the key elements in creating who we truly are. without those experiences, and bad memories, you may not have become the stronger person you are today. it is easier to accept something when we explore the opportunities and possibilities that come out of it. so take the things that went wrong, and grow from it. if you can go through it, you can grow through it.
  4. EXPECT LESS- we live in a world that tells us to want more, be more, and do more. this isn’t always a negative message, but it often gets in the way of our life-satisfaction. we are constantly focusing on how to be more like something that we are not. whenever something doesn’t meet our expectations, we get upset or frustrated or irritated or disappointed. life can almost seem unfair in the moment or even worthless. but that is simply because of the expectations we have in our head. we don’t need to look like the girl on TV or the model on instagram, we need to look like ourselves and BE ourselves. focus on what you want to create instead of what you expect to happen. creation is motivating, expectation is demanding.
  5. SET NEW GOALS- you not be able to change what you’re going through right now, but this doesn’t mean you can’t live a full and meaningful life. you can adapt and adjust to your present circumstances. so set new goals for yourself. realistic goals. did you not lose as much as you wanted to? find a plan that can help you do it and stick to it. did you not end up getting the promotion you thought you would get? oh well, make it a goal to push even harder and work even harder to get it the next time. stop avoiding difficult issues and only focusing on what you can’t change. focus on what you can do about the situation, and if you can’t change something it’s time to accept this reality.

my hope for this post is to show someone that even though life my not be ideal, we can make it ideal and perfect in our own eyes. we can take the things we do not like, and the things we do not accept, and grow from these. we can come out on the other end stronger and an even better person. remember your worth is defined by YOU. God made you beautifully and it is so important to know that. accept the past, move on, and keep doing you.

Counting your Blessings

Growing up, I was always taught to count my blessings. So I would pretty much go through the same routine everyday. You know, thanking God for my mom, my dad, my siblings, my grandparents, my aunts and uncles, the rest of my amazing family, and honestly whatever I could think of in the moment. A few years ago my grandma gave me a sign that read, “when I count my blessings, I count you twice”. I put it on my shelf and didn’t take it down until I moved out. Today, as I was going through some stuff I brought to college that I haven’t gone through yet, I remembered that sign. I don’t have it with me but looking at my other decor made me think of it. It had me thinking. I have always counted my blessings and I have always thanked God for everything I have. But today I looked around my little dorm room and noticed little things that I had never thanked him for. We are so used to living in this society that we don’t realize how truly blessed we are. I then started praying right then and there. I thanked God for this little dorm room to keep me safe, I thanked God for my shower shoes so I don’t get any funk on my feet, I thanked God for my fan for keeping my cool, I thanked God for my keurig and coffee for keeping me awake on those early mornings, I thanked God for my bed that keeps me cozy, I thanked God for my backpack that carries my schoolwork, I thanked God for this amazing University that I love so much, and I thanked Him for so much more. I went around my entire room and thanked Him for every item I have.  Sometimes we get stuck on the rollercoaster that is life and we forget that everything we have comes from The Great Lord above. Every little thing in our lives is a blessing and counting them all would take years. But its worth a shot right? I mean, considering God took the time to create these things, we can take the time to thank him for them. I am blessed in so many ways and I could not be more thankful. From now on, when I count my blessings, I am counting ALL of them twice!

A new goal of mine is to write down every blessing. When I can’t sleep, I will write down a blessing. When I am having a bad day, I will write down a blessing. No matter what it is. It could be something as silly as my chick-fil-a breakfast on Friday mornings in the student union building! I truly believe we are all so blessed and I believe remembering that God gave us all of this is a great reminder of that. I challenge whoever is reading this, to write down their blessings too! And if you’re interested in sharing.. I would love to hear yours.

The truth about moving somewhere new

Everyone’s ecstatic for you- a little sad, but mostly proud of you for making a big decision and venturing to a new place that you will soon call home.

I’ve been here for about a week. I honestly thought I would miss home like crazy and cry my eyes out every day. But I don’t. This place has quickly become the place I would like to call home forever. Well my second home, that is. Who knows where I will end up when I graduate. But anyways, thats besides the point. Moving to a new school in a new city and by yourself can be pretty nerve wracking. Your mind is running at about 2000 mph and you just wonder to yourself, will i have friends? what if I don’t fit in? what if I get lost? what happens if I don’t succeed? what if my classes are hard? These are just a few of the things that went through my mind as I made the glorious 5 hour drive to good ole Lubbock, Texas. You know, a lot of people told me I wouldn’t like it here. Some people told me it was boring, some people said it was “too hick”, but I happen to think its absolutely perfect for me. It’s not a very big town but seems enormous thanks to everything here being built around Texas Tech. Not to mention, this campus is HUGE. When I make a mad dash for my 11am on MWF, I kinda feel like I am running a marathon. (thats because my 10am is about a 16 minute walk away and your girl only has 10 minutes to get there) Lets just say its going to take a little bit to get used to this campus. I used to wake up at 7:50 for my 8am and get there with two minutes to spare. If I tried that now, lets just say that 10 minute walk would turn into a 4 minute sprint and me wearing my pajamas 🙂

Needless to say, I love this place, and I love this school. Transitioning is hard but everyone here has made it really easy and smooth. I have only been here a week and I have met so many amazing people. I didn’t really know what to expect since all of these people had a whole semester to get to know each other. But luckily I got matched with the best roommate in the whole world. I mean seriously guys, she’s absolutely precious. I have never felt more welcomed at a new place. I had no idea what to expect, but this has been the best move in a long time.

The actual learning part of college has been great too. I am currently enrolled in 17 hours and an online class. That’s kind of a lot to put on myself as a freshman at a new school, but I’m not worried considering one of those classes is Yoga. My instructor said we will have meditation days where we can just come into class and sleep. When he said that, the exact thought that went through my head was, “so you’re saying… I come into class and sleep… and get credit for it? umm BOOYAH!!”. No joke, I almost said it out loud. But it was the first day, so I figured lets not be rambunctious the first time this guy meets me. All of my professors have been amazing. They are all so unique in their own ways and it makes me excited to go to class and learn. I could not have asked for better.

Texas Tech has welcomed me and I am thrilled to finish out my undergraduate here. I love this place and its truly a blessing that I have the found the school that is just right for me. Thanks for taking the time to read this. I know it’s a little scatterbrained.. but that’s because I am scatterbrained. (I’m also running on 4 cups of coffee)

Moving. It’s hard, it’s lonely, and you’ll probably eat a lot of ramen. But once you’re settled in, and for sure its the place for you. It feels like home in no time 🙂

2018: whats hot? whats not?

Well hello readers! Its been a hot minute since I have updated this blog of mine. In fact.. I haven’t blogged since LAST YEAR… ba dum tss!!

Haha anyways, so instead of making the typical “here are my new years resolutions” post, I decided to jazz it up a bit. Im calling it my hots and nots list! Basically it will be a confined list of things that will be present in 2018 for me and things that will not. The hots are things I would like to do, and the nots is kinda a “stop doing it” type of list. I hope you enjoy these, as I put some thought into them. If you would like to share your personal resolutions, I would love to hear them, comment them!

Enjoy 🙂

What’s hot?

I will….

  • stop procrastinating
  • improve my concentration and mental skills
  • meet new people
  • become more confident
  • take risks
  • learn how to love myself
  • become more active
  • maintain constant happiness
  • start saving more money
  • adopt a cute pet
  • learn how to turn my hobbies into a career
  • face my fears and insecurities
  • stick to the healthy habits I have established
  • start putting myself before others when needed
  • be myself, and love who I am

Whats not?

I will stop…

  • making excuses
  • feeling guilty for things that are not my fault
  • overcommitting
  • acting like “no” is a dirty word
  • pouring myself into people who can’t reciprocate
  • complaining about what I don’t want to do, until I can do better
  • confusing what I “want” and what I “need”
  • listening to other’s opinions of me
  • forgetting my self worth
  • comparing myself to others
  • sweating the small stuff
  • trying to please everyone
  • letting other people’s words define me

New years resolutions are tricky because its something we all say we will stick to but many of us fail. This year is going to be a year of change for me as well as a year of growth. I am truly going to work on bettering myself and become the person I dream of being. With that being said, I hope all of you stick to your own resolutions and have a year filled with joy and love. Thanks for reading. Happy New Year!
